First snow in the woods: a photographic fantasy by Carl R. Sams II and Jean Stoick (2007) compile stunning photographs of woods into a narrative. With a fawn as the main character, children may identify with the conversations that take place between it and a variety of wildlife including a chipmunk, squirrel, and woodchuck. The text is informational. We learn that a woolly bear caterpillar chews a fern leaf, and a dragonfly hatched in midsummer, "soon the monarch would follow a distant memory. On fragile wings, his heart song would lead him to a tropical garden thousands of miles away." Reference to heart song gently weaves through this tale of an approaching snowstorm. A chipmunk frantically digs a hole for the fawn saying, "'Hey! Where is your home? … don’t you know you need a hole? Here! I’ll help you dig. I’ll make it big!'" The deer family moves to a low ground cedar forest, where they will be safe and warm.
